Open Cell Spray Foam

Open cell spray foam and closed cell spray foam both provide insulation and air sealing all in one! Open cell spray foam is made up of cells that are not completely encapsulated and are deliberately left open. It has a lower R-value than closed cell spray foam and has bubble cells when applied. The foam is a soft low-density material (0.5 pounds per cubic foot) that allows for moisture permeability, which helps contribute to moisture management and bi-directional drying of the wall assembly. Open cell spray foam insulation is also vapor permeable, can accommodate seasonal movement, and is not a food source for mold. Call us today at (570) 308-2031.

Open cell spray foam insulation is typically used in two scenarios, the first is in a cooling climate (a climate where you need to cool down the inside of your home much more intensely than heating), and the second is in a vented attic (even in a cold climate where you use heat) because it will not hold moisture in anywhere. It is preferred for interior use over exterior use and is often used for sound dampening. Open cell spray foam can be applied to:

·      Interior applications

·      Wall cavities

·      Underside of roof decks

·      Attics

·      Attic ductwork

·      Basement walls

·      Crawlspaces

Spray Foam Insulation

One example where it would be appropriate to use open cell spray foam is when you need to run new wiring. This is a good choice because open cell spray foam is much easier to work with because it is so pliable. One of the biggest benefits of using open cell foam is that it expands so much after it has been applied that it can insulate hard to reach nooks and crannies in a home or commercial property. These types of areas can be difficult to insulate with closed cell foam.

There are a number of additional advantages to using open cell spray foam insulation, including:

·      Light weight

·      Sound proofing qualities (ideal for media or theatre rooms)

·      High absorbency

·      Allows for bi-directional drying

·      Can accommodate long-term creep and seasonal movement

·      Can be installed at lower cost

·      Is not considered food source for mold

·      Less expensive

·      Uses less resources

·      Can accommodate a building expanding and contracting due to             temperature differentials, moisture content, wind load, and seismic           activity

There are also a number of disadvantages to using open cell spray foam insulation, including:

·      Low compressive strength

·      Less useful in cold climates where heating is required

·      Cannot block air movement

·      Cannot prevent water vapor from entering the wall cavity

One way that open cell spray foam differs from closed cell is that it needs to be trimmed. Trimming the foam is necessary in order to obtain a smooth and consistent surface and finish.
